AMAK is committed to protecting the health and safety of its employees and contractors at its mine site. We strive to provide a safe and healthy workplace for our employees and contractors, and we have made a commitment to :
Each operation is responsible and held accountable for the development and implementation of procedures and programs that comply with this policy. The Board of Directors oversees health and safety management.
The AMAK EHS mission is to protect the health and safety of all site personnel, protect the environment, and ensure institutional compliance with (Saudi Presidency of Meteorology and Environment [PME]), also any applicable International laws and regulations and to control risk and minimize institutional liability.
At our mine site, we drive our EHS culture through strong leadership and the involvement of all our employees and contractors to ensure that we will not compromise our EHS values. We are proud of our clean manufacturing facilities and our recycling initiatives, especially our water management system (plant processing water and sewage treated water) in a place where water resources are scarce, we continually seek means to reduce waste streams and meet or exceed PME regulatory environmental standards.
We strive to maximize productivity without compromising employee safety. The implementation of a comprehensive safety and health program is an important tool for creating both a safe and profitable workplace. The benefits of maintaining a safe work environment are many, but first and foremost, safety is about protecting our workers. The practice of safety also brings financial benefits.
At AMAK we truly believe a safe work environment impacts a company’s bottom line, both directly and indirectly. Costs associated with incidents are minimized in a safe work environment. So are the indirect costs that follow incidents. Further, a safe work environment boosts employee morale, which, in turn, increases productivity, efficiency and profit margins, we also believe that if we practice safety effectively, it will result in fewer unscheduled interruptions and minimize costs.
We are committed to providing safe work areas, machinery and equipment; to providing information, instruction, training and supervision; and to providing personal protective equipment. We are committed to creating an injury-free workplace for employees, suppliers, contractors, partners and visitors alike.
Two of the major environmental issues in our business are management of wastewater and management of tailings. Wastewater and tailings can contain substances that are potentially harmful to human beings and the environment, especially in large quantities. Some of the environmental measures that are being implemented, or are planned to be implemented, at our Mine are:
All sites at Al Masane are to be zero water discharge sites; this includes waste water and tailings effluent, which is recycled to the processing plant for use in mineral processing. With a very high annual evaporation rates, water in this arid region is a valued resource. Monitoring of water quality is undertaken at regular intervals to ensure pH and other parameters are at an acceptable level. Calcium carbonate is added to wastewater to control pH value to within a range of 7 to 8, and it will not have any adverse effect on the environment so long as such wastewater is not discharged. All sites at Al Masane are to be zero water discharge sites; this includes waste water and tailings effluent, which is recycled to the processing plant for use in mineral processing. All tailings from the processing plant are hauled and stored in a state-of-the-art TSF. The ore processing facilities located at Al Masane Mining Complex produce approximately 1800 tons of tailing/day, all tailing are hauled by trucks on a daily basis.
Monitoring of water and air quality, noise and waste management is conducted by our contracted environmental consultancy firm (ESCO). They take all the environmental measurement on a quarterly basis and report it to the PME. We also undertake our own schedule of regular water and air quality monitoring. To date, the mine has complied with all regulatory requirements.
