During 2011, the activities of the company were mostly focused on the completion of the construction and the start of the commissioning phase of ore treatment plant, which effectively started on 28 November. The treatment process is carried out in accordance with the engineering designs and through the established stages which include crushing, grinding, floatation, and dewatering. The Port of Jazan on the Red Sea is the export route and is situated 450 km from the mine.
Underground mining operations also started inside the mine in order to extract ore through blasting and excavation processes, and then transporting the ore to the treatment plant. The total length of tunnels excavated is more than 8 Km. The first 6 months of 2012 have been spent on testing & commissioning the plant, executing necessary design modifications while the development of the underground mine continued. The opportunity was taken to continue building the company’s own operational infrastructure along the side of the operations contractor and ensuring highest environmental standards. In the meantime, the company’s operational capability at the port of Jazan was also upgraded. The plant started commercial operations in July and the first shipment of copper and zinc concentrates from Jazan was made in October
